Il s'agit du 30ème album d'Elton contenant les titres The Bridge et Tinderbox. Faisant écho à son album Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy, The Captain and the Kid retrace l'étroite collaboration entre Elton et son parolier Bernie Taupin.
Cet album signe un retour d'Elton à un rock plus percutant et dynamique.
